Kakejiku / Kakemono The work depicts a scene with the most powerful symbols of longevity and good fortune:

The Cranes (Tsuru): Two elegant Japanese cranes are at the center of the scene, their necks facing the rising sun. The pair of cranes embodies loyalty, marital happiness, and long life (they are said to live for a thousand years). Their presence in the painting augurs a peaceful and lasting future.

The Turtles (Kame): At the feet of the cranes, two turtles stand out. The turtle is another powerful symbol of longevity and wisdom (it is said to live for ten thousand years). Together with the cranes, they form a wish for eternal life and good fortune.

Completing the scene:

Pine (Matsu): Symbol of strength and resilience, as it remains green even in the cold winter.

Plum (Ume): Symbol of perseverance and renewal, being the first to bloom at the end of winter.

The Red Sun (Hinomaru): The sun rising (or setting) on the horizon is a symbol of rebirth, energy, and Japan itself.

Temporary Display (Tokonoma): It is almost always displayed in the tokonoma (床の間), a raised niche and the most honored part of the main room of a traditional Japanese home.

Seasonal and Occasional Rotation: Its flexibility is crucial. The kakemono is hung only temporarily and then put away. Japanese families often own several, which are rotated according to:

Special Occasions: To celebrate holidays, or when important guests visit.
