Katoributa
Katoributa (蚊遣り豚), literally "mosquito-swatting pig," is an iconic and beloved piece of Japanese summer culture. It is not a kitchen utensil, but a ceramic container, typically shaped like a pig, used to burn mosquito-repelling spiral incense (known as katori senkō).
Distinctive Design: The most common shape is that of a stylized pig, often with its mouth open to let the smoke escape. This design is not only aesthetic, but also functional: the shape helps to evenly distribute the incense smoke, creating an effective barrier against mosquitoes.
Materials: They are traditionally made of ceramic or earthenware, which is heat-resistant and safe for holding burning incense.
Traditional Use: Katoributa are a symbol of the Japanese summer, often seen on porches, in gardens, inside homes, or at outdoor restaurants. They are not only practical for keeping mosquitoes away, but also add a touch of nostalgia and a relaxed atmosphere.
Incense (Katori Senkō): A spiral of green (or other colored) incense is placed inside them, which burns slowly, releasing smoke with a light scent of pyrethrum, a natural substance with insecticidal properties.
