KAKEJIKU / KARUJIKU is a medium-sized scroll, hence its name. The work depicts a scene with the most powerful symbols of longevity and good fortune:

The Cranes (Tsuru): Two elegant Japanese cranes are at the center of the scene, their necks facing the rising sun. The pair of cranes embodies loyalty, marital happiness, and long life (they are said to live for a thousand years). Their presence in the painting augurs a peaceful and lasting future.

The Turtles (Kame): At the feet of the cranes, two turtles stand out. The turtle is another powerful symbol of longevity and wisdom (it is said to live for ten thousand years). Together with the cranes, they form a wish for eternal life and good fortune.

Completing the scene:

Pine (Matsu): Symbol of strength and resilience, as it remains green even in the cold winter.

Plum (Ume): Symbol of perseverance and renewal, being the first to bloom at the end of winter.

The Red Sun (Hinomaru): The sun rising (or setting) on the horizon is a symbol of rebirth, energy, and Japan itself.

Drawing Technique: "Giclée," a high-quality digital printing process, often used to reproduce works of art, which uses pigment inkjets on high-quality media such as canvas or paper.

Modern Mounting: The painting is elegantly framed in dark blue washi paper with traditional geometric patterns.

Note: New item. Comes with its own packaging: a finished cardboard box.
Painting Dimensions: 51.5 cm x 19.5 cm.
Roll Dimensions: 90 cm x 26 cm. Materials: Washi paper.

Use and Function

The kakemono's primary use is as an interior wall decoration, but it also has a profound, ritualistic meaning:

Temporary Display (Tokonoma): It is almost always displayed in the tokonoma (床の間), a raised niche and the most honored part of the main room of a traditional Japanese home.

Seasonal and Occasional Rotation: Its flexibility is crucial. The kakemono is hung only temporarily and then put away. Japanese families often own several, which are rotated according to:

Season: A spring floral motif will give way to a summer landscape or autumn calligraphy.

Special Occasions: To celebrate holidays, or when important guests visit.

Tea Ceremony: In the tea pavilion, a kakemono display is essential, and its design must be in keeping with the season or the spirit of the gathering, acting as a mediator between the host and his guests.

Aesthetic Harmony: In addition to painting or calligraphy itself, kakemono is often used in combination with other art forms in tokonoma, such as ikebana (flower arrangement) or bonsai, to create a single, harmonious scene that reflects the principles of wabi (rustic simplicity) and sabi (beauty of imperfection and aging).

Common Subjects: These range from landscapes (sansui), human figures (often religious or literary), naturalistic subjects such as flowers and birds (kachōga), to calligraphies featuring poems or Zen maxims.
